• An editor will skim your submitted manuscript and provide general feedback regarding content, theme, voice, and other big-picture issues.
• No actual edits will be made to your manuscript.

Copyediting is designed to correct errors and ensure the cleanest and clearest copy (or text) possible. This process is the last step before formatting a book and it includes, but is not limited to:

• Checking grammar, word usage, spelling, capitalization, punctuation, abbreviations, and acronyms
• Checking and creating consistency with numbers and symbols
• Editing for clarity and readability
• Querying anything questionable
• And our Petra Press special: Scripture checking. If any scriptures are quoted (or referenced!), we will verify that the address and the quoted version are accurate.
• Citation formatting is an additional service provided only upon request.

Copyediting does NOT include rewriting sentences, restructuring a manuscript for flow, or adjusting the author’s voice.

Once the copyedited manuscript has been reviewed and approved by the author, the copy is then formatted. We will format your book for you, submitting the proof to you for your review, feedback, and approval. Formatting includes, but is not limited to: 

• Font size and typeface
• Page size and margins
• Header/footer/page marker styles
• Titles, subtitles, and other division elements
• Copyright page, table of contents, and other front matter
• Bibliography and other back matter

After a book has been formatted and is for all intents and purposes ready to go to print, these proofs now need a final check for any errors created during formatting or missed during copyediting. A proofreader will only look for egregious errors, including, but not limited to:

• Typos
• Missing words and punctuation
• Typography and design errors
• Copyright page information and Table of Contents

• Once your formatted book has been proofread, your project is now ready to be sent to the printer! Getting a book from a digital file to a physical copy, however, is not necessarily simple.
• If one of our printers that we work with offers the services you are looking for, we will navigate this final process on your behalf, communicating with the printer for you regarding cover art and dimensions, digital file issues, etc.
